Our History

How we started

The College of Education started at the time of the Angeles Institute of Technology (now Angeles University Foundation), was established on May 25, 1962 as part of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). It initially focused on undergraduate programs. Four years later in 1966, the Graduate School was organized. Though established as an independent unit with its own dean and support staff, the College of Education and the Graduate School co-existed, supporting and strengthening each other’s programs.

CED’s growth path would not stop. The College in Higher Education Act and aiming to upgrade the Teacher Education program through the implementation of CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) 30 series of 2004, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) involved AUF College of Education faculty to take charge of the Region 3 capacity building and orientation on the implementation of the new Teacher Education curriculum.

The College started offering Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) curriculum in 1986 and Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSE) in 1989. The AUF Integrated School, which offers elementary and high school, functions as the college’s laboratory school.

In the Academic Year 1991-1992, the two programs of the College were classified under category “A” by the DECS, Region III, a distinction awarded to very few institutions of higher learning in Central Luzon.

An administrative re-structuring was implemented in the Academic Year 1999-2000 with the introduction of the verticalized structure. The structure provided for the clustering of related programs in both graduate and undergraduate levels under one college, i.e. all the graduate programs in education were under the College of Education, the Public Administration and Business administration under the College of Business Administration and the Nursing program under the College of Nursing. The vertical structure concept for the academic disciplines was especially recommended by the CHED for universities with strong undergraduate programs.

In the Academic Year 2003-2004, the verticalized structure of the College of Education was replaced by the “old” structure. Once again, the College was made to focus on undergraduate programs. The College then offered two curricular programs. Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) with six areas of concentration (English, Filipino, General Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and MAPE); Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) with eight major fields (English, Filipino, Biology, Biology-Chemistry, General Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and Physical Education, Health and Music or PEHM. These curricular offerings underwent revisions based on CHED requirements and to respond better to the peculiar needs of the AUF prospective teachers.

In one of the assemblies of the CED College Parents Association (CPA), it was announced to the parents that the college would offer Chinese language Teaching (CLT) as part of the double-major program intended for BSEd. Hence in June 2010, CLT has become a tandem course of any area of specialization offered by the BSEd program in partnership with the Confucius Institute and the Fujian Normal University, People’s Republic of China. Two years after, the program prioritized having CLT paired-up with the language courses, English and Filipino. At present, CED has already produced six (6) batches of graduates who have successfully completed the double-degree program.

In June 2014, CED offered the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) major in School P.E cognizant to the CMO 23, series of 2011, and in June 2019, CED offered Bachelor of Special Needs Education (SNEd) degree program in line with the CMO No. 77, series of 2017.

In its quest for excellence, accrediting agencies have accorded awards to the College. These include the following: Center of Excellence for Teacher Education awarded by the Commission on Higher Education for establishing and maintaining a good record in teacher education, research and community service from 2010-2025; Center of Training School in the region as a service provider in the intensive mass training on K-12 curriculum for the in-service elementary and high school teachers of the DepEd. This recognition was given by Teacher Education Council (TEC) of the Department of Education; Partner institution, prototype teacher education syllabi developers, and developers of learning resource packages in the MATATAG curriculum of Department of Education and Philippine National Research Center for Teacher Quality; Level IV Accredited Status to both Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education programs as awarded by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines for having met the standards and the requirements of PAASCU (Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities); ISO 21001:2018 (International Organization for Standards) for having established and applied a quality management system for the development and provision of the academic program of CED together with the other units in the university; From a small unit in 1962 that gradually emerged as a formidable college, CED has produced topnotchers, passers in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and hundreds of graduates who are now gainfully employed as educators and education managers.
