Dr. Barbara Yap Angeles, founder and first president of Angeles University Foundation, was born on December 4, 1907—a moment her family regarded as a blessing worthy of thanksgiving. Her birth, so close to Christmas, was celebrated in the spirit of the season. On Christmas Day, relatives and friends gathered to witness the infant Barbara open her eyes for the first time, meeting her guests with a gentle squint and an innocence that left a lasting impression.
As the years passed, the once-fragile infant grew into a bright and endearing schoolgirl. She distinguished herself academically, earning recognition for her aptitude in mathematics and her proficiency in languages. Modest by nature and averse to public acclaim, Barbara found fulfillment not in recognition, but in the quiet satisfaction of meeting—and often exceeding—academic expectations.
From the very beginning, her path was guided by purpose. When she enrolled at the College of Education of the Centro Escolar de Señoritas, Barbara already carried a deeply rooted vision: to create, organize, and sustain an educational institution that would serve those who had less in life, yet possessed immense potential for growth and leadership.
With the encouragement of her family and friends, Barbara envisioned a school that would play a meaningful role in uplifting the academic prospects of the youth. Shortly after graduating in 1930, she began the formidable task of turning her dream into reality. A year later, through the generosity and support of her brother, Ildefonso Angeles, that vision took form — Angeles Academy, the first private school in Pampanga, opened on May 10, 1931.
Angeles Academy began modestly, housed in a semi-concrete, one-storey structure with four classrooms. The early years were marked by dedication and hard work. However, Barbara's trusting nature left her vulnerable to disloyalty within her ranks, and circumstances beyond her control forced her to set aside her dream temporarily. In 1933, Angeles Academy closed its doors.
Nearly three decades later, fortified by experience and renewed determination, Barbara once again answered the call of her mission. On May 25, 1962, with the support of her family, she established the Angeles Institute of Technology. This time, she faced challenges with greater resolve and wisdom.
On the very day the Angeles Institute of Technology opened, a massive fire razed the Angeles City public market, leaving thousands homeless. Moved by compassion, Barbara and her husband Agustin Angeles immediately extended free tuition and scholarship opportunities to the children of fire victims — an act of generosity that deeply endeared the couple to the people of Angeles City.
Dr. Barbara Y. Angeles was a woman of wisdom, faith, and unwavering purpose. Though she witnessed firsthand the pain of betrayal and human frailty, she remained undaunted. That dream lives on today through Angeles University Foundation — an enduring testament to her vision, resilience, and heart for service.
